BoConcept’s Ottawa sofa wins prestigious GOOD DESIGN® AWARD

Danish contemporary furniture brand BoConcept proudly announces that its innovative 2017 Ottawa sofa, designed by Karim Rashid, has been awarded a GOOD DESIGN® AWARD.

The award, which was established in 1950, is considered the oldest and most prestigious global award programme for design excellence and design innovation. Founded by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., Eero Saarinen; and Charles and Ray Eames, the award is organised by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

‘Since 1950, Good Design has become an internationally acknowledged benchmark and symbol of outstanding design that serves as a beacon for design-interested audiences in our global economies,’ says Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President, The Chicago Athenaeum.

The Ottawa sofa
The innovative and organic modular sofa system was designed by internationally acclaimed industrial designer, Karim Rashid. Primarily designed for business settings, it features 10 distinct modules, including ottomans, tri-directional and omni-directional modules, as well as backless and conventional sofa modules. The collection also features power sockets and USB ports, and includes a sleek, low-profile side table.

‘It is astounding to experience the lack of thought put into so much public and contract work. Seating in hotels is always so far away from one another with huge oversized coffee tables in the way. I can’t communicate with someone 4 feet away over a modernist slab table. There should be a sense of intimacy. But at the same time, you should be able to be very private and work in your own world,’ says Karim Rashid.

He continues, ‘I always love this idea of modularity and reconfigurability. I wanted to do a system that on one hand has reconfigurability but when it’s reconfigured, it always looks different. It’s like a changing landscape.’

Business to home
The brand has also marketed the system to home-use customers, showing its most recent curated version in blue velvet; just one of currently a dozen upholstery options.

A family tradition
The sofa system is the latest addition to the Rashid-designed Ottawa collection. Two of its predecessors, the Ottawa dining chair and table, received both a Good Design Award and a Red Dot Design Award in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

‘We are incredibly proud to learn that such a respected section of the industry is as captivated with the Ottawa sofa system as we are. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership with Karim in the near future,’ says Claus Ditlev Jensen, Collection Director, BoConcept A/S.

Each module of the Ottawa Sofa System is available to buy now in BoConcept stores and online.
